I admire the strength and endurance of these disappearing species in the face of losing their habitats, surviving the impact of climate change, and the threat of poaching for the exotic animal trade. I think of them as veterans in a tough war for survival.

In this Veterans series I used up-cycled war surplus, used tarps, emergency homeless blankets, burlap sacking and cheesecloth to express their endurance and fragility.

Not all the news on endangered species is grim. I honor the people who work hard to keep these creatures flourishing. In 2022, I started working with the Sheldrick Trust, to develop work that honors both the animals they save and their caregivers. Their work with orphaned animals is depicted here in the Endangered Animal Heroes quilt.
